The community of Russell Springs, Kentucky, is grieving for its own Lt. Josh Phipps, who was shot and killed in the line of duty.
Following the unfortunate incident on Bluebird Drive, the community, law enforcement and local leaders expressed their condolences and solidarity.
Lt. Phipps' death was announced on Facebook by the Russell County Fiscal Court, which was the first to publicly acknowledge the tragic incident. The wording of the statement is as follows:
“People of Russell County, we regret to inform you that Josh Phipps, one of our sheriff's deputies, has been killed in the line of duty. His family, as well as our community, need our sincere prayers for comfort and peace. On Monday night, a local radio station, Laker Country 104.9 WJRS, first reported that one officer had been shot. The report states that many law enforcement agencies were dispatched to the area, and the station verified that there is no ongoing danger to the public. Although there are still few details about the shooter, it is known that there was only one suspect in the horrific incident.
Tributes from other officers and emergency services poured in, demonstrating the palpable sadness of the community. A touching post was posted on Facebook by Russell Springs Fire Rescue, saying: “We are grieving alongside our brothers and sisters at the Russell County Sheriff's Office. Our hearts are heavy.” We are inconsolable for one of our personal losses today.
