A student died after jumping from a campus parking structure on October 2, 2024, shocking and saddening the entire university community at Portland State University (PSU). After receiving a complaint of a fatal fall in Parking Structure 1, located at 1872 SW Broadway, Portland State University Campus Police and other law enforcement agencies arrived. There they found the body of a student. He was pronounced dead on the spot.

The young man attended the HSU-PSU School of Public Health. His identity is being withheld out of respect for his family and his privacy concerns. The unfortunate tragedy occurred late Wednesday night, and according to initial reports, the student jumped from the building, prompting investigators to look into the possibility that the death was a suicide. According to the initial reports of the police, there is no indication of foul play, and now the emphasis is on finding out what might have happened before the tragic loss.

The events of the evening happened quite quickly. Around 18:30, the Law Police received several emergency calls reporting the discovery of a body near the parking lot. Campus police rushed to the scene and, along with Portland emergency crews, attempted to revive the student by providing first aid. Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, the man succumbed to his injuries and left the school in shock. First responders had confirmation of the death by 7:15 p.m., prompting a somber and heartbreaking message to the campus community.

The university was severely affected by the student's death. Teachers, staff and students are processing the event and trying to cope with the heavy emotional toll it took. The next morning, PSU President Ann Cudd issued a statement extending her sympathy to the deceased's family and reiterating the university's determination to provide assistance to those affected.
