The residents of Mount Vernon, Indiana mourn the passing of Marjorie “Bip” Lois (Irwin) McGennis, who was 83 years old when she passed away on October 2, 2024. Bip was a beloved person who was well known. For her kind disposition, her commitment to her family and her involvement in the neighborhood. Bip was born in Posey County, Indiana, on January 22, 1941. Her parents were Elisha and Elsie Irwin. She grew up in a close-knit farming family and carried her farm wife customs all her life.
She worked as a custodian for the Metropolitan School District of Mt. Vernon in addition to her work at the farm, where she was known and loved by the staff and students. In addition, Bip was involved in the extension housewives club, served on the extension council and gave back to the community as a member of the 4-H council. She has spent many years impacting the lives of young people as a leader of the Victory Bees. Her dedication to her community and her faith was further demonstrated in her work with the Eastern Star and the First Christian Church.
Bip was best known for her adoration of her family. Above all, she loved being a loving grandmother, and she got tremendous satisfaction in that role. Her legacy is one of love, generosity and devotion. Alan “Bump” McGennis, Bip's husband, and several relatives, including her twin sister Joyce “Josh” Davis, preceded her in death. Her surviving family and the countless people she hurt at Mount Vernon are deeply saddened by her death. Marjorie “Beep” McGennis will be honored for her service to her family and hometown as the community remembers her, and will ensure that many people carry her memory forward.
