Sports broadcaster Tom McCarthy works in the field. He broadcasts play-by-play for the Philadelphia Phillies on television and calls Westwood One's radio coverage of National Football League games. He calls several college basketball and NFL games for CBS. McCarthy used to influence the men's and women's basketball teams at St. Joseph's University.
McCarthy was the radio play-by-play announcer and postgame radio host for the Philadelphia Phillies for five seasons (2001–05). He previously worked six seasons (1994–1999) as the play-by-play announcer for the Double-A Trenton Thunder. In addition, he provided play-by-play commentary for Rutgers University football games as well as national football and basketball broadcasts on the Sports USA Radio Network, Atlantic 10 Television Network, Westwood One and CBS Sports Network (formerly CSTV).
After working as a play-by-play commentator for the National League East rival New York Mets on WFAN for two seasons (2006–07), McCarthy signed a five-year contract to return to Philadelphia beginning in 2008. After Harry Callas passed away early in the 2009 season, McCarthy assumed full-time responsibility for the television show. McCarthy joins Tim McCarver and Todd Kalas as the only two broadcasters to regularly cover the Phillies and Mets.
McCarthy covered men's basketball and soccer at Princeton University for nearly ten years. During the Tigers' 43–41 upset victory over defending NCAA champion UCLA in the 1996 NCAA Tournament and their 27–2 run during the 1997–98 season, he provided play-by-play commentary. In 2009, McCarthy called play-by-play of the 2009 Caribbean Series for MLB Network from the studios of Secaucus, New Jersey, with color commentary provided by Uri Berenguer, Spanish-language radio announcer for the Boston Red Sox.
