We regret to inform you of the passing of Officer Kevin Vasquez of the Texas Department of Public Safety. On September 17, while responding to a traffic collision in Ector County, Texas Highway Patrol Trooper Kevin Ramirez Vasquez was struck by a car, seriously injuring him. After being airlifted to a Lubbock hospital, he succumbed to those wounds. Vasquez was a veteran of the US Army.
What caused the death of Kevin Vasquez?
Following an accident in Ector County, a recent graduate of the Texas Public Safety Academy (DPS) and a veteran of the United States Army has passed away. On September 17th, while assisting in a traffic situation out of his patrol car, Highway Patrol Officer Kevin Ramirez Vasquez of Hockley, Texas, Texas was struck by a vehicle and suffered fatal injuries.
Although he was taken to a hospital in Lubbock, he tragically died from his injuries. The DPS Troopers Foundation has begun fundraising through the Help-a-Hero program to support the Vasquez family following this tragedy.

After graduating in 2023 from the Texas Public Safety Academy (DPS), Vasquez began working as a police officer in Odessa, Texas. He has been trained in community policing, crisis management and law enforcement tactics. In Odessa, Vasquez worked with locals to foster trust and improve neighborhood safety by managing missions including patrol, emergency response and crime prevention outreach.
His dedication to serving the community and his continued professional growth – which included training in traffic enforcement and conflict resolution – positioned him as a respected law enforcement official.
