The Texas A&M swimming community, as well as her loved ones and friends, is mourning the sudden death of Jessica Lee Sloan, a former swimmer for the school. Those who knew Jessica, both in and out of the pool, are still in shock over her sudden passing. She was a person full of life and commitment, who had much more to offer. Those lucky enough to have met Jessica are looking back on the courage, joy and positivity she instilled in their lives as details for her celebration of life memorial service are being finalized.
Jessica Sloan was a bright and talented young woman who was born and raised in Texas. She discovered her passion early in life – both in the water and in her interactions with other people. She found that swimming gave her a platform for self-expression and allowed her to convey her motivation, tenacity and competitive spirit. Her athletic career began as a young child, splashing through the water with an effortless grace that would eventually lead to success in one of the most prestigious athletic programs in the university.
Jessica enrolled in the Texas A&M women's swimming program with the intention of becoming known and, most importantly, fitting in with a group of people who valued hard work, camaraderie, and a passion for the sport. She left a lasting legacy as an Aggie of diligence and tenacity, traits that earned her the respect and admiration of opponents, teammates and coaches alike. Jessica, on the other hand, was a beacon in the lives of others around her in addition to being a talented swimmer.
Jessica's teammates remember her infectious optimism and unwavering support. She always found a way to encourage people, no matter how demanding the competition or how hard the training was. Even in the worst moments, her bright smile and inspirational comments lifted the spirits of her fellow swimmers. Jessica's presence was helpful whether it was during a demanding early morning workout or in the locker room before a meet. She had the ability to bring some joy to even the most difficult of circumstances.
