Retired Sergeant Greg Richardson died suddenly on September 22, 2024, and the Olathe Police Department is in deep mourning.
Greg was known for his integrity, compassion and steadfast dedication to public service. His loss is deeply felt both within the department and in the greater community he dedicated his life to protecting.
In the early 1990s, Greg began working for the Olathe Police Department. He soon made a name for himself as a respected officer who was committed to his job and demonstrated professionalism.
He put in many overtime hours during his 25-year career in a variety of capacities, such as community outreach, patrolling and investigations. Colleagues remember his extraordinary ability to connect with residents, often going above and beyond to foster relationships and trust within the community.
Gregg was a police officer, but he was also a friend and mentor, according to the police chief, who worked with him. He had a special talent for giving others a sense of security and worth. Every meeting he demonstrated his empathy and understanding, and he never wavered in his belief in the effectiveness of community policing.
Greg took on additional duties after rising through the ranks to become a Sergeant, concentrating on training and teaching newer officers. He was known for setting an exemplary example and being a valuable mentor to incoming members.
His co-workers respected the way he led, emphasizing the value of community involvement, honesty and respect. According to a fellow officer, “He had a profound impact on the careers of many officers, shaping the future of our department.” “Those he inspired will carry on Greg's legacy – a true leader.”
Besides his work in the police force, Greg took an active part in several community projects. In an effort to foster constructive relations between law enforcement and the younger generation, he worked with neighborhood youth initiatives.
His efforts in every endeavor demonstrated his dedication to improving Olathe for all. A local official said, “Greg was passionate about giving back to the community.” “He recognized the value of fostering relationships and working together to make everyone's environment safer.”
