Looking back on that special night, Phillips remarked, “The energy of the crowd was incredible.” In the end, I believe it pushed us. It was a fast game, and I remember as the last five minutes approached, everyone felt exhausted. So the crowd's enthusiasm kept fueling you. It was really meaningful to me.
“Curtis stood his ground and probably had one of the best goalkeeping performances I've ever seen in my life,” he said, praising Pallidwar's outstanding performance.
The Roughnecks' 2004 victory marked the end of an improbable journey. The team finished with a 10-6 record in only its third season and was ranked third in the Western League heading into the playoffs. Defying the odds, they beat the Colorado Mammoths and the San Jose Rams to go to the title game. Seen by many as a Cinderella story, the Roughnecks upset their doubters by winning the Cup, even though the Raiders, who were also ranked third, were the favorites.
