James A. Dalia, a resident of Hillsdale, died as a result of an officer-involved shooting that prompted an investigation by the New York State Police.
James Delia, 48, of Hillsdale, New York, was shot after police were called to a man threatening to kill himself Wednesday around 4 p.m.
The police statement said Dalia defied orders, led officers on a chase, and then flashed a gun before being shot.
The New York State Police released a statement about the incident.
It reads; “On Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at approximately 4:00 p.m., Trooper attempted to locate James A. Delia, 48, of Hillsdale, New York who was threatening to harm himself. Officers located Delia in the parking lot of the Albany-Saratoga Freeway on Route 9 of State in the city of Malta, New York.
“When troopers attempted to interview Delia, he disobeyed lawful commands to exit his vehicle and fled the scene. A low-speed vehicle chase ensued. Delia then stopped his vehicle in the parking lot of Bethel Saratoga, 3246 State Route 9, in Saratoga Springs, New York. He again , refused to get out of his vehicle despite numerous orders to do so. Dalia brandished a firearm, then one of the soldiers fired his weapon and fatally wounded him.
Dalia was posthumously mourned by many friends and family on social media.
“I'm still in shock, when the news broke last night I couldn't believe it, we always had good times together, even my kids were shocked when they saw the news, because they always loved talking and enjoying your company when they saw you. You will be missed by many Jimbo. RIP my friend ,” read one post.
His son, also James Delia, wrote on Facebook: “I can't do it,”
